New Amsterdam

Hailed as "a polished, versatile chamber group...combin[ing] the formal elegance of chamber music with a pop-honed concision" (Steve Smith, Time Out New York), NOW Ensemble is one of many acts featured on New Amsterdam Records, a haven for young New York composers and performers whose music slips through the cracks between genres.

On this concert, NOW performs music by Timothy Andres, Patrick Burke, Mark Dancigers, Stephen Gorbos, Judd Greenstein, Missy Mazzoli and Anthony Suter, with premieres by John Altieri and Kirsten Volness. After Sibelius,Tim Howell's study of Finnish composers, offers "a deliberation about why and how this small country is producing more contemporary music per capita than any other," and wonders "what makes this music Finnish?" This concert features music by three of the country's most prominent composers: Magnus Lindberg, Esa-Pekka Salonen and Kaija Saariaho.

When in Rome

One of the highest honors an American composer can receive is the Rome Prize, affording them a year-long residency at the American Academy in Rome. The award has been bestowed upon luminaries from Samuel Barber to Elliott Carter; this program focuses on music written by more recent winners, during and after their time abroad: Lisa Bielawa, Sebastian Currier and Pierre Jalbert.
